Cobra 10s golden jubilee concludes on 'high note' for host club

KUALA LUMPUR: The Combined Old Boys Rugby Association (Cobra) are looking to take the iconic Cobra 10s competition to a higher level next season.

After a three-year break due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the competition came back for its 50th edition over the weekend at Padang Astaka, Petaling Jaya, which is also the venue the tournament was first held at in 1967.

Cobra themselves would go on to win both the men's and women's categories of the competition.

They upset three-time winners Daveta (Fiji) 19-0 in the men's final and defeated Dingoes RC 17-5 in the women's decider yesterday.

Organising committee chairman Lieutenant-Colonel (Rtd) Tommy Pereira said the club were grateful to resume hosting the tournament.

"We had nine men's teams and four women's teams who delivered top class rugby. The finals were a fitting finale to a great weekend of rugby," said Tommy today.

"The weekend ended on a high note for Cobra when both of our teams won in their respective categories.

"Our golden jubilee (edition) was a fitting occasion to revive interest in the Cobra 10s and we look forward to better participation and a higher standard of rugby next year."

Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh presented the trophies to the winners yesterday.

Tommy expressed his gratitude to the Youth and Sports Ministry, IJM Corporation Bhd, Sideline, Peri Formworks (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, Newfields Group, West Coast Expressway and Malaysia Airlines for supporting the event.
