Swimming federation on the hunt for head coach, technical director

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia Swimming Federation (MAS) has received more than 20 applications for the positions of head coach position and technical director.

MAS secretary-general Andy Low said the national body were shortlisting candidates whom they will propose to the National Sports Council (NSC) for approval.

"We advertised on the World Aquatics website and more than 20 people have applied (both positions combined)," said Andy when met recently.

"We have their resumes, however, the range of salaries (requested) is quite big.

"We are going through a selection process and will have to come up with a justification to hire them before we go into a working committee meeting (with NSC), probably at the end of this month or mid-December."

The head coach and technical director positions are both new.

Andy added that Chris Martin's future with Malaysia has yet to be decided.

Martin, a respected figure in the sport, was hired as national team coach in April 2019.

"Martin is still working for us, however, his contract will run out at the end of the year," added Andy.

"It depends on whether he is offered a new contract and (whether he) is willing to continue.

"If he does agree to continue, he will be working under the (new) head coach. It will be up to him, we have not made any decisions yet."

The national swimming team and MAS have come under-fire in recent years after disappointing performances in the sport, especially at the last two editions of the Sea Games.

The Youth and Sports Ministry are looking to revive the sport's fortunes in the country.
