Wushu exponents continue to shine at world meet

KUALA LUMPUR: Exponent Wong Weng Son continued his fine form at the World Wushu Championships in Fort Worth, Texas, by winning a silver medal in the men's qiangshu event yesterday.

Weng Son's routine in the final scored him 9.800 which was enough to place him second behind China's Zhang Qingchun (9.833). Indonesia's Mohd Daffa Golden Boy completed the podium on 9.760.

Weng Son, who won gold in the men's changquan on Saturday, was all smiles after his event.

It is the fourth time in a row (2015, 2017, 2019, 2023) that the 31-year-old has finished on the qiangshu podium at the world meet.

"There was less pressure on me (after winning changquan gold) and I knew China would be the favourite in this event," said Weng Son.

"I just wanted to complete my routine without making any errors. Thankfully all went well."

Weng Son will next compete in the jianshu event tonight. It is the last day of the competition.

Meanwhile, Malaysia also bagged a brace of bronzes through Clement Ting (gunshu) and Calvin Lee (nanquan).

Clement scored 9.803 in the gunshu final which saw Indonesia's Seraf Naro Siregar (9.800) and Singapore's Jowen Lim (9.823) taking silver and gold respectively.

Calvin's 9.776 score was good for third in the nanquan behind Macau's Huang Junhua (9.800) and Hong Kong's Lau Chi Lung (9.802), who won silver and gold respectively.

In the women's events, Loh Ying Ting claimed silver in the daoshu after scoring 9.783. China's Liu Xin took the gold on 9.830 and Vietnam's Hoang Thi Phuong Giang (9.763) settled for bronze.
