Weng Son completes medal hat-trick at world championships

KUALA LUMPUR: Exponent Wong Weng Son capped his campaign at the World Wushu Championships in Fort Worth, Texas on a high note by winning his third medal of the meet yesterday.

Weng Son's routine in the men's jianshu final saw him scoring a commendable 9.806 points which was enough to claim the silver medal.

Indonesia's Mohd Daffa Golden Boy (9.786) took the bronze while Macau's Song Chi Kuan (9.820) clinched the gold.

Weng Son had earlier in the tournament won the changquan gold - Malaysia's only gold in Texas - and then followed up with silver in the qiangshu.

The national team captain has now finished on the qiangshu and jianshu podium at four consecutive editions of the world meet (2015, 2017, 2019, 2023).

Meanwhile, the other events held yesterday witnessed Pang Pui Yee, Loh Ying Ting and Tan Cheong Min settling for fourth (9.586) in the women's duilian while Pui Yee also placed fourth (9.763) in the women's qiangshu.

National team coach Koo Chee Zhong was pleased with his charges' overall performance in Texas.

"We won 11 medals this time which is more than the eight we won at the 2019 edition," said Chee Zhong.

"From the eight Malaysian athletes that competed, six of them were able to win medals while the other two were able to achieve top-five finishes in their events."

Malaysia won one gold, seven silver and four bronze in total this year to place sixth in the overall medal table.

As expected, China emerged the overall champions on an impressive 15-0-0 haul. Vietnam (5-3-3) and Macau (5-2-4) came in second and third overall.
