Team SMG target top four at Mobile Legends World Championship

KUALA LUMPUR: Competing against the best teams in the world will be a whole new challenge for Malaysia's Team SMG at the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) M5 World Championship in Manila next month.

SMG qualified for the world meet after securing one of the two Wild Card slots on Sunday, following a superb 3-1 win over Peru's Imperio in the crossover elimination match at JioSpace Petaling Jaya.

This will be SMG's second appearance at the World Championship after making their debut at the M3 in Singapore two years ago.

Team captain Lu Khai Bean, better known as Sasa, is one of the team members from the 2021 M3 squad.

He pointed out that the team will need to improve on their teamwork and make better decisions to achieve a top-four finish at the world meet on Dec 2-17.

"We don't have much time to train and prepare for the World Championship because it starts next week. Like it or not, we have to try and give our best.

"It won't be easy because we will be going up against the best teams in the world.

"When I first competed in the M3 World Championship, I wasn't much of a team player. Three years down the line, I am playing better as a team player," said Sasa.

Before reaching the crossover stage, SMG had topped Group A with three wins from three matches against Laos' Nightmare Esports, Saudi Arabia's Team Falcons, and Nepal's 4Merical eSports.

SMG are the second Malaysian team to qualify for the M5 World Championship.

HomeBois were the first Malaysian team to secure their place in the world meet after defeating SMG 4-3 in the Grand Finals of the MLBB Malaysian Professional League (MPL MY) in October.
