Joe Ee, Nur Dhabitah, Wendy vie for Federal Territories Sportswoman Award

KUALA LUMPUR: The tussle for the Federal Territories Sportswoman title is set to be hotly contested by Nur Dhabitah Sabri, Wendy Ng Yan Yee and Ng Joe Ee at the 2021-2022 Federal Territories Sports Awards Night in Putrajaya tomorrow (November 28).

Seventeen-year-old rhythmic gymnast Joe Ee, who was a sensation at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games by capturing two golds in the ball and ribbon events, is seen as the favourite, having been crowned the 2022 National Sportswoman.

However, she can expect a tough fight from 24-year-old diver Nur Dhabitah, who finished fourth in the women's 3-metre (m) springboard event at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 as well as two silvers in the Commonwealth Games and bronze in the women's 10m platform synchronised event with Datuk Pandelela Rinong.

Wendy, 30, meanwhile, clinched silver in the 3m springboard synchronised event with Nur Dhabitah in Birmingham as well as took home two gold medals from the Hanoi Sea Games held in May last year.

Meanwhile, the Federal Territories Sportsman Award is set to be a three-cornered fight between weightlifter Muhammad Erry Hidayat, who clinched silver in the 73-kilogramme (kg) event in Birmingham, swimmer Steve Khiew and karate exponent S. Prem Kumar.

The Federal Territories Sports Council (MSWP), through a statement, said the winners of both categories will take home RM8,000 cash, a challenge trophy and Felet sports goods sponsorship worth RM1,000.

Swimmer Bryan Leong, silat exponent Muhammad Khairi Adib Azhar and karate exponent S.G. Kathish will vie for the Most Promising Sportsman award while the Most Promising Sportswoman award will also be a three-cornered fight between 2022 Malaysia Games (Sukma) athletics sensation Winnie Eng, silat exponent Ain Najwa Muhamad Basri Darul and rhythmic gymnast Valerie Ng.

The winners of these two categories will take home RM5,000 cash as well as Felet sports goods sponsorship worth RM1,000.

MSWP director Nik Ahmad Zahiruddin Nik Saleh said a total of 14 categories will be contested this time after it had been cancelled the last four years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"As the governing body that coordinates the development of sports in the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan, the awards night will see the convergence of the best athletes, coaches and teams in the Federal Territories," he said. — BERNAMA
