Sarawak Southern Zone crowned champions of Suksar III

SIBU: The Southern Zone contingent were crowned the champions of the third edition of the Sarawak Games (Suksar III) after collecting 63 gold medals throughout the four-day championship, which concluded yesterday (Jan 18).

Wushu contributed the highest number of gold medals for the zone with 17, followed by taekwondo (11), boxing (nine), silat (nine), weightlifting (five), cycling (four), judo (four), futsal (two), and karate (two).

In addition, the Southern Zone contingent, covering the areas of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian, also secured 43 silver medals and 38 bronze medals, bringing the total medals won during the Games to 144.

The event, held from Jan 15 to 18, also named two taekwondo athletes from the Southern Zone, Fedealis Twin and Farah Nabilla Maddarus, as the Male and Female Most Promising Athletes of Suksar III respectively.

Meanwhile, the Central Zone (Sibu, Mukah, and Kapit) finished second overall with 50 gold medals, 47 silver medals, and 54 bronze medals, followed by the Northern Zone (Miri, Limbang, Bintulu) in third place (49 gold, 56 silver, and 58 bronze) and the Western Zone (Betong, Sri Aman, Sarikei) in fourth place with eight gold medals, 22 silver medals, and 44 bronze medals.

The closing ceremony of the Games at the Sibu Indoor Stadium today was officiated by Sarawak Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, representing Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. -- BERNAMA
