Pistol shooter Alia hopes to appear in Rio

KUALA LUMPUR: Pistol shooter Alia Sazana Azahari hopes to have a shot at qualifying for the Paris Olympics.

The two-time Sea Games champion is keeping her fingers crossed that she will get to compete in the Olympic qualifier in Rio de Janeiro from April 11-20.

The Rio event will be the last competition for shooters to qualify for the Olympics from July 26-Aug 11.

Podium Programme athlete Alia said: "It will all depend on whether the National Shooting Association of Malaysia (NSAM) allows me to compete (in Rio) to win a place in the Olympics.

"Last year, I missed the chance to qualify by just a few points in the Asian Championships (in Changwon City, South Korea)," said Alia, who finished overall 13th.

Alia, 32, also competed in last month's Asian Championships in Jakarta but she did not qualify for the final.

If Alia gets to shoot in Rio, she will have to finish in the top eight to qualify for the final.

Alia, who won the 25m pistol bronze in the 2018 Commonwealth Games, will compete in the Tun Hanif Trophy in Subang next week.

Meanwhile, Johnathan Wong will feature in two legs of the World Cup in preparation for his second Olympics.

The 31-year-old will compete in the men's 10m air pistol in Granada, Spain, from Feb 10-18 and in Munich, Germany, from May 31 to June 7.
