'Ironman' Irfan and Andre flop in Adelaide

KUALA LUMPUR: Triple jumper Andre Anura Anwar and discus thrower Irfan Shamsuddin had a disappointing outing at the Adelaide Invitational Athletics Championships on Saturday.

Two-time Sea Games champion Andre, who has a personal best of 16.51m, only managed 15.79 to finish fifth from eight participants.

The 24-year-old Sabahan started with a jump of 14.79 and cleared 15.66 and 15.79 in the second and third jumps.

He recorded 14.76 in his fourth and did not record jumps in his subsequent two attempts.

Australia's Aiden Hinson (16.34) won the gold medal, with Connor Murphy (16.33) and Julian Konle (16.18) bagging silver and bronze, respectively.

Meanwhile, Irfan managed 57.15 to finish sixth in the nine-field discus event. His best attempt was way off his national record of 62.55.

New Zealand's Connor Bell won gold by setting a meet record of 65.93. Australian Matthew Denny (65.74) and Nicholas Percy of Britain (63.09) settled for silver and bronze, respectively.

Andrea and Irfan were hoping to earn valuable rankings points in their respective events to qualify for the Paris Olympics.

Andre is ranked 29th in the Road to Paris rankings, while Irfan is 52nd in his event.

Only the top 32 highest-ranked athletes in the field events by June will qualify on merit for the Olympics.

Malaysian Athletics Federation technical director John Ballard said both athletes performed below par despite the good conditions in Adelaide.

"If they continue with this form, they will not qualify for the Olympics.

"However, I believe they were trying too hard to do well in Adelaide.

"Andre and Irfan will have chances to shine when they compete in Melbourne on Feb 15 and New Zealand on Feb 24," said Ballard.
