Young squash stars Ameeshenraj, Hafiz shine in Europe

KUALA LUMPUR: C. Ameeshenraj and Hafiz Zhafri continued their fine runs by reaching the final of their respective tournaments on Friday.

However, it was the end of the road for national No. 1 Ng Eain Yow at the London Classic.

World No. 134 Ameeshenraj reached the Liverpool Cricket Club Open final when he stunned second seed Ben Smith of England 11-7, 11-3, 11-3 in 28 minutes in the semi-finals.

The Bristol-based player will face world No. 89 Viktor Byrtus of the Czech Republic, who defeated Egypt's Kareem El Torkey 12-10, 11-7, 11-5 on Friday, for the crown.

The 20-year-old Ameeshenraj was, understandably, delighted with his fine run in the US$15,000 tournament.

"I feel motivated after overcoming world No. 70 Smith in the semi-finals. I hope to build on this and record more victories in tournaments to improve my ranking," said Ameeshenraj, who won the PSNS President Trophy in Negri Sembilan last year.

Meanwhile, Hafiz, the top seed, is only one match away from winning the Hollolan Kuntokeidas Open in Finland and taking home US$3,000.

The Kedah-born defeated third seed Manuel Paquemar of France 11-6, 11-9, 6-11, 11-9 in 46 minutes in the semi-finals.

Hafiz will face seventh seed Omar El Torkey of Egypt in the final.

Omar upset sixth seed Joshua Phiner of France 11-7, 11-8, 11-8 in the other semi-final match.

Eain Yow produced a respectable showing before losing 15-13, 11-9 to world No. 5 Karim Abdel Gawad of Egypt in the second round of the London Classic.

It was world No. 22 Eain Yow's fourth career defeat to the Egyptian.
