Aira shows true grit at El Gouna

KUALA LUMPUR: Another collision and another win for Malaysia's Aira Azman at the El Gouna Open in Egypt on Saturday.

World No. 41 Aira collided with Scotland's world No. 32 Georgia Adderly in the third set of the second round, and needed a 15-minute medical timeout. She managed to continue play and won 11-7, 8-11, 6-11, 14-12, 11-9.

In the first round, Aira collided with Egypt's Hana Ramadan and needed on court medical treatment on her knee before winning.

Aira will face England's world No. 6 and fourth seed Georgina Kennedy for a place in the quarter-finals today.

Aira is the only Malaysian to reach the third round after S. Sivasangari, Aifa Azman, Rachel Arnold and Ng Eain Yow fell in the second round.

Aira is now worried about her body condition after the two collisions.

"I've had this injury a couple of times. I recover, then got it again. It happens whenever I'm on tour and I've been really upset about it because I've put so much effort into getting my body healthy."

On her two collisions, Aira said: "I was very upset but I knew I could push through. It was more of a mental game."
