Tree collapse in Jalan Sultan Ismail: Investigate before assigning blame, says expert

KUALA LUMPUR: It is premature to conclude that the huge tree which fell in Jalan Sultan Ismail on Tuesday during a storm was hacked and improperly managed, an expert said.

Persatuan Arborist Malaysia president Mohd Zailani Jamil said people should not read too much into viral videos in the past two days on the condition of the tree.

He emphasised the importance of a thorough scientific investigation.

"We cannot assume anything based on the viral images.

"There is no evidence proving that the tree was hacked when the cement structure was built around it," said Zailani.

The reason for the collapse is likely multifaceted and complex, he added.

Extreme weather, which can alter soil stability, and natural ageing of the tree itself may have contributed to "structural compromise".

"It's essential to consider various possibilities," he said.

One person was killed in the incident, another was injured and 17 vehicles were damaged.

Parts of the tree hit a monorail track, disrupting services for more than a day.
