STAM president hopes World Cup wins sparks sepak takraw rennaisance

KUALA LUMPUR: Sepak Takraw Association of Malaysia (STAM) president Datuk Sumali Reduan hopes that Malaysia's historic double victory at the Sepak Takraw World Cup yesterday will boost the sport's popularity in the country.

Malaysia's long-suffering fans were in a state of euphoria after watching the national doubles and regu teams stun Thailand in both finals at the Titiwangsa Stadium yesterday.

Malaysia has played perennial bridesmaid to Thailand in the sport over the last two decades. The lack of success has, over time, eroded the sport's popularity here.

Sumali hopes the double victory marks the start of a new beginning for the sport in Malaysia.

"It is a historic achievement for us as we have never won a doubles title before in any major competition, be it at the Sea Games or Asian Games.

"And we have not won any inter-regu title for a very long time. This is something we have been longing for.

"The atmosphere was amazing, the tickets were sold out early and the whole stadium was packed. Even the big screen outside the stadium was watched by many. Normally that only happens to football.

"It brought Malaysians together and I hope more Malaysians will support the sport. This is our traditional sport, our heritage.

"I want sepak takraw to regain its former glory and this is the first step. We hope to inspire the future generation of players."

Though delighted with the squad's performances so far, Sumali said he has reminded the players not to get carried away.

The World Cup competition moves into the team event today which will culminate with the final on Sunday.

"We have to continue our momentum in the team event and try to go for a hat-trick of titles here. There is no time for daydreaming and we definitely cannot afford to be overconfident," said Sumali.

"Today we proved that we can beat Thailand on home soil, moving forward, the next step for us is to prove that we can beat them in other international competitions abroad or even on their own home soil.

"We have to show consistency, that is the only way we will earn the respect of others."

Sumali added that more big screens viewings could be set up across the country on Sunday if Malaysia advances to the team event final.
