Typhoon only 'delays' tennis disappointment

THE typhoon that came and wrecked their Sea Games playing schedule, only prolonged the disappointment.

When play resumed at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Centre in Manila yesterday after a 24-hour interruption, Malaysia’s Shamirul Shahril Adam Das and Christian Didier Chin, both 19 years old, fell in the quarter-finals.

Shamirul, who had upstaged Thai second seed T. Wishaya in the second round on Monday, lost 6-1, 6-1 to Filipino Jeson Patrombon. Christian went down 6-3, 6-0 to Vietnam’s top seed Daniel Cao Nguyen.

Their matches, initially scheduled for Tuesday, were delayed till yesterday due to Typhoon Kammuri.

Christian, who admitted it was not his day, said:‘I had chances in the first set but he (Daniel) is pretty good and is 10 years older than me. He is expected to win this (tournament) pretty easily.’

In the men's doubles played later yesterday, Shamirul and Syed Agil Syed Naguib reached the quarterfinals after beating Cambodia’s Ponlok Khleang-Sarith Our 6-2, 6-2.

It was, however, the end of the road for Malaysia’s Sara Nayar and S. Theviya in the women's doubles as they lost 7-5, 6-2 to Philippines’ Denise Dy-Khim Iglupas.

Suhana Sofia Adam Das-Jawairiah Noordin also bowed out, losing to Indonesian duo Rifanti Kahfiani-Priska Nugroho 6-4, 6-1.
