'Indonesians not involved in Jolo bombings'

NO Indonesian was involved in the twin bombings that killed 14 people and wounded 75 others in Jolo, Sulu province, earlier this week.

This was asserted by the Indonesian government on allegations made in the media that one of the suicide bombers could be Indonesian, The Jakarta Post reported.

Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi dismissed the allegation when extending the Indonesian government's condolences on the attacks, which happened an hour apart around noon on Monday.

"We would like to send our deepest condolences to the victims' families, the government and the people of the Philippines," she said at a press conference on Thursday.

Retno said based on information and reports gathered by the ministry, no Indonesian citizens were affected by the incidents.

She asserted that no Indonesian was involved as claimed by news outlets.

Retno gave her assurance that the ministry would monitor the situation through coordination with the Indonesian embassy in Manila and the Consulate-General's Office in Davao.

"Based on information from the Western Mindanao Command, the suicide bombers were identified as two women," she added. "Both women were identified as local residents."

Initial findings showed that the twin explosions were caused by widows of militants.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, but authorities in the Philippines believe they could be linked to the Islamic State and Abu Sayyaf.
