Authorities destroy over 300,000 marijuana plants

MANILA: Over 300,000 marijuana plants, estimated with a street value of about 62 million pesos (RM4.85m), were destroyed by the authorities in a three-day blitz.

The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), backed by the local Philippine National Police (PNP) unit in Tinglayan, Kalinga raided several locations where the plants were grown, Philstar.com reported.

Raids started in the wee hours on Friday and lasted until Sunday, a source revealed and that the operation was held in the villages of Buscalan, Butbut Proper and Loccong.

PDEA agents and the police destroyed around 310,000 marijuana plants in three plantations, which covers a total land area of 25,950 square meters. No suspects were arrested during the operation.

Meanwhile a total of 75 people were arrested for illegal cockfighting in Mexico, Pampanga on Sunday.

Central Luzon police director Brigadier General Matthew Baccay said the suspects did not resist when police officers rounded them up in Barangay Lagundi.

Five live and two dead roosters were recovered along with 52,150 pesos in cash at the scene of the incident, he said and that charges will be filed against the suspects.
