M'sia condemns multiple terror attacks in Pakistan; confirms no M'sians affected

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia strongly condemns the terrorist attacks in Quetta, Karachi and Parachinar on Friday, which killed at least 80 people and injured more than 100 others.

"It is our hope that the perpetrators of the despicable crime will be expeditiously identified and brought to justice.

"The Government of Malaysia also expresses its deepest condolences and sympathies to the Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and to the bereaved families," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement today.

The ministry also confirmed that there was no Malaysian casualty in the attacks.

"So far, no Malaysian has been reported to be (affected by) the incidents. However, the Foreign Ministry, through its High Commission in Islamabad and the Consulate General in Karachi, will continue to monitor the situation," it added.

Pakistan's three major cities were attacked by armed groups on the eve of Eid-ul Fitr.

Twin bombs ripped through a packed market in the northwestern city of Parachinar, killing at least 67.

Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, a Sunni armed group, claimed responsibility for the bombings in the predominantly Shia Muslim metropolis.

Earlier on Friday, a suicide bomber blew himself up at a police checkpoint in Quetta, in Balochistan province, killing at least 14 people, including 10 police officers.

Jamaat-ur-Ahrar, a faction of the Pakistan Taliban, claimed responsibility for the attack.

In another attack, militants in the port city of Karachi, in Sindh province, opened fire on police officers at a roadside restaurant and killed four of them before fleeing.
