Three in Singaporean family killed in US road crash; 19-year-old girl sole survivor

SINGAPORE: A Singaporean family of four who were on holiday in the United States met with a tragic fatal accident last Friday, Dec 22.

The head-on collision between a Hyundai sedan – which the family was travelling in – and a mini-van en route to the Grand Canyon in Arizona killed the parents and one of their children, leaving behind a 19-year-old survivor who is being warded in a US hospital.

Justlyn Yeo Jing Hui, a first year student at the Nanyang Technological University’s (NTU) Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, is in stable condition, TODAY understands.

The American Broadcasting Corporation reported that five other people were injured in the accident, which occurred near the Grand Canyon Village at about 2.20pm US time last Friday on the northbound road of Arizona State Route 64.

Following the accident, the road was closed in both directions for seven hours as law enforcement officers conducted their investigation.

Yeo and her family were taken to hospital along with the other victims, but her parents and a sibling succumbed to their injuries.

It is understood that her relatives have flown over to the US, and the Singapore Consulate-General in San Francisco is rendering consular assistance.

Schoolmates of Yeo told TODAY that she is involved in the school’s annual theatre production, and had last checked in on Instagram on Dec 21 when she posted pictures that she took at San Francisco, California – a 12-hour drive away from the Grand Canyon, a popular tourist destination.

When contacted, the NTU and Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs declined comment, out of respect for Yeo’s privacy. – TODAY ONLINE
