Over 1,000 evacuated in Singapore fire

SINGAPORE: A fire at a building in Bras Basah Road here today forced the evacuation of about 1,000 people, according to the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).

No one was reported injured, it said in its Facebook account.

The SCDF said it responded to the fire incident at 76, Bras Basah Road, at about 1.15 pm.

A check showed that the address was of the Carlton Hotel.

SCDF said the fire, which was contained within a switch room, was extinguished using fire extinguishers.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, it said.

It was not certain whether the incident had caused blackouts in some areas in central Singapore.

SP Group, a government-owned electricity and gas distribution company, said electricity supply to parts of the Bugis, City Hall, Marina and Somerset areas was disrupted at 1.09 pm.

It said supply was progressively restored from 1.19 pm and fully restored by 1.21 pm to all areas except the Carlton Hotel.

“Our teams are carrying out works at the substation serving the Carlton Hotel to restore supply as soon as possible,” it said in an update on its Facebook account.

“We are investigating the cause of the incident,” it said.-- Bernama
