Kelantan hit by third wave of floods, 1,000 victims evacuated

KOTA BARU: Kelantan was hit by the third wave of floods today after three districts were affected following heavy rain since last night.

The affected districts were Pasir Mas, Jeli and Tanah Merah.

The three districts saw some 1,064 victims being evacuated to eight relief centres as at 10.30am.

The 1,064 victims from 285 families, were moved to the centres in stages since last night.

As of 10.30am, three rivers in Kelantan recorded readings above their danger levels.

The rivers were the Kelantan rivers in Gua Musang and Jeli, and Pergau river in Jeli and Golok river in Tanah Merah.

The Golok river in Pasir Mas recorded at 8.48m which is 0.48m above its warning level of 8m.

Yesterday, Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) issued a severe-level continuous heavy rain warning starting today until Monday for several areas in Kelantan and the whole of Terengganu.

MetMalaysia in a statement said the affected areas in Kelantan are Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Kota Baru, Tanah Merah, Bachok, Machang, Pasir Puteh and Kuala Krai.

It also issued a continuous rain warning at the alert level for several areas in Pahang and Kelantan which is expected to last until Dec 25 while the alert for Mersing and Kota Tinggi in Johor is until today.

In Kelantan, the districts listed include Jeli and Gua Musang while in Pahang, the areas affected are Jerantut, Kuantan, Pekan and Rompin.
