Watch: Grass fire breaks out in parched Singapore, worsening haze

SINGAPORE: A grass fire about the size of a football field broke out near Jurong Town Hall Road on Friday.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said in a statement that it received a call at about 5pm on Friday alerting it to the fire. It was “near Jurong Town Hall Road at the exit to the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) towards the city”.

“The fire involved an open grass patch covering one football field,” said the statement.

“The fire was extinguished by SCDF using water jets. No one was injured as a result of the fire.”

A video shared on Facebook that was taken from above shows what appears to be smoke rising from an open field with several trees, as well as a few isolated blazes.

Haither Ithin, a cosmetics company employee, was driving along Jurong Town Hall Road at about 5.30pm when he witnessed the blaze.

“It was like a haze, and I thought the PSI must have suddenly become 200. Everything looked very cloudy and the smell was super strong,” the 41-year-old told TODAY. – Today Online
