Eight injured in Myanmar military plane crash in Northeast India

NEW DELHI: A Myanmar military aircraft that came to India to pick up fleeing soldiers crashed in the northeast Indian region today (January 23).

Eight of the 14 people on board were injured when the Shaanxi Y-8 plane overshot off the tabletop runway and split in half at Mizoram state's Lengpui Airport, local media reported.

The small plane came to pick up Myanmar soldiers who had crossed into India recently to flee clashes with rebel groups.

Hundreds of Myanmar soldiers have fled to India in recent weeks as junta troops battle armed insurgents.

Flights to Aizawl airport were diverted to other locations after the crash.

India returned 184 of the 276 Myanmar soldiers who entered the border state of Mizoram last week and 92 were to be sent back today (January 23), according to reports. — BERNAMA
