Idris Haron yet to decide whether he will defend Sungai Udang seat

MELAKA: Former chief minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron has yet to decide whether he will defend his Sungai Udang seat in the upcoming state election.

He said that he is considering his options from all aspects before deciding on the matter.

The only certainty is that he will not be contesting under Barisan Nasional (BN) as he was sacked from Umno following his withdrawal of support for Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali.

"I am not sure (on contesting which seat) but I will not be doing so as a BN candidate. Whatever happens, I will continue to fight and insya-Allah the voters in the state are wise enough to choose the right leader for them," he said today.

Idris also remained coy on the political party to which he will hitch his allegiance.

He said he will discuss with various parties, including Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders, on which seat he would contest.

He also said that early preparations were vital in ensuring party machineries are able to carry out their responsibilities effectively.

Previously, it was reported that Idris will defend his Sungai Udang seat and could face Tangga Batu Umno division chief Senator Datuk Seri Mohamad Ali Mohamad.

Idris had previously said he would not budge from defending the seat which he had won in the past two consecutive general elections (GE).

Ali reportedly is ready to face Idris in the state election, which would show the level of support one has to serve the people.

Idris lost to Ali in the election for the Tangga Batu Umno division chief's post in 2018.

Idris, who was representing BN at the time, had defeated PKR's Mohd Lokman Abdul Gani by a majority of 2,229 votes in the 14th GE in 2018.
