Commonwealth champs do 11th hour homework

KUALA LUMPUR: Newly crowned Commonwealth Games women's doubles champions Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah believe that the best of them is yet to come. And they aim to shine in the World Championships in Tokyo on Aug 22-28.

The world No 11 said in order for them to do well, they need to improve their consistency.

Thinaah pointed out that their game remains shaky at times

She was referring to their hard-fought 21-15, 11-21, 21-15 win against Singapore's Jin Yujia-Crystal Wong in the Commonwealth Games last eight.

"Consistency is one important aspect that we're lacking and we have to work on it in our training."

Pearly-Thinaah certainly can't afford any slip-up at the World Championships after being drawn in the same quarter with world No 5 Nami Matsuyama-Chiharu Shida of Japan and No 4 Kong Hee Yong-Kim So Yeong of South Korea.

These are the two major hurdles that Pearly-Thinaah must overcome in their bid to be Malaysia's first women's doubles medallist at the World Championships.

Thinaah has not set any target in Tokyo, and would let their performance do the talking on the court instead.

"If we play well enough, then the result will come," said Thinaah.

Pearly said while their Commonwealth Games success was a boost, the World Championships is a different ball game altogether.

"We can't afford to get carried away. In Tokyo, we're going to face highly-ranked pairs who are very consistent, particularly those in the top 20.

"We need to improve what we're lacking in the two weeks that we have in training."

Pearly-Thinaah had a World Championships debut to forget in Huelva last year. Seeded 13th, they fell in the second round to Hong Kong's lowly-ranked Ng Tsz Yau-Yuen Sin Ying.
