Abandoned cars taking up precious parking bays

Abandoned cars are not only an eyesore, but they also take up parking space.

In Uptown Bandar Perda, Bukit Mertajam, stall owners leave their cars in parking lots during the day and use these cars as storage for their businesses at night.

Checks by the New Sunday Times revealed that some cars had expired road taxes, flat tyres and had not been moved for years.

Seberang Prai Municipal Council secretary Rozali Mohamud said the council had issued compounds to owners of abandoned cars.

On April 15, 25 compounds and notices were issued under Section 46(1)(e) of the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974.

“We have towed away some of the cars, but the problem is that the depot to store these cars is full. The council is building a new depot, which is expected to be completed by next month,” he said.

Rozali said the council was also calling a tender for auctioning the cars that had not been claimed by anyone.

“The council hopes that Uptown businesses will be more responsible and not occupy car parks during the day so that they can be used by other motorists,” he said.
