Telephone booths with no working telephones

OLD telephone booths in George Town are as an eyesore since most of the telephones are no longer usable.

A reader said there were two such telephone booths in Jalan Penang.

Both booths belong to the Penang Island City Council , the reader said.

One of the booths had no telephones and the other was used as a place to hang and display clothing by a trader nearby.

“They’re an eyesore. The authorities should do something and not just leave the booths there without any working telephones,” he said.

ACTIONLINE:

Penang Island City Council Infrastructure and Traffic alternate chairman Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik said the structures would be removed soon.

“There had been several discussions about the telephone booths, especially on whether they are relevant.

“Eventually, some of them will have to be removed.

“There are also some that are not owned by the council, like the one in Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling.

“We still have to leave some of them as there may be people who want to use it. For those that we keep, we will ensure that they are properly maintained.”
