Crying foul over rubbish

A PEDESTRIAN has complained of bad smell wafting from the garbage collection area near Putra Ria Flats and Abdullah Hukum Apartments in Jalan Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur.

The pedestrian, who wanted to be known only as Suriani, 45, said the stench was due to overflowing rubbish bins and rubbish strewn on the road.

She claimed that contractors who collected rubbish did not clean up the area.

“The stench is unbearable. It reflects badly on our city.”

She urged the authorities to take immediate action to the longstanding problem.

A spokesman for the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp Malaysia) said the issue came under the purview of the management of Abdullah Hukum Apartments and Putra Ria Flats.

“SWCorp will engage the joint management body to clarify on the cleansing part. The area is filthy. They (the management) should be more responsible.”

The spokesman also pointed out that contractors only collected garbage.

It was the apartment management’s responsibility to ensure proper disposal of garbage, he said, adding that avoiding spillovers would ease the work of contractors.

“Spillovers happen because some people rummaged through the rubbish bins looking for recyclable items.”
