Illegal food stalls endangering pedestrian safety

DESPITE the authorities’ efforts to make sure no illegal stalls are set up on pedestrian walkways, some still refuse to abide by the rules.

Checks by Actionline in Jalan Pantai Permai, Kuala Lumpur, found that several food stalls were operating on the pedestrian walkway.

This has encouraged motorists to buy food from these food stalls, double park and cause traffic congestion.

A pedestrian, who only wanted to be identified as Anu, said, the stalls had been operating for quite sometime.

Anu, who has been using the walkway, said she was forced to walk by the side of the road and was worried that she might be an accident victim.

ACTIONLINE:

A Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) spokesman said he had referred the matter to the council’s Licensing Department and the department had said that it did not issue any licences to the stall operators.

“Previously, DBKL took action against these operators and they had agreed to remove their tables and chairs. We did not expect the operators to do this again. Now that we have been alerted, we will issue summonses and confiscate the tables and chairs,” said the council’s spokesman.
