A GROUP of motorcyclists in Klang Valley, supposedly fed up with the local authorities’ delay in resolving issues, such as damaged roads, exposed manholes and potholes, has taken matters into its own hands.
Calling itself the Ampang Brotherhood, the volunteer group mends potholes and covers up manholes in and around Klang Valley using its own funds.
Its representative, Syazmin Asyraff, said during the Merdeka week, they spotted an uncovered manhole in Jalan Ampang and had marked it with paint.
“One of our members met with an accident because of the manhole.
“At night, it is difficult for motorcyclists to see exposed or damaged manholes, as well as potholes. On rainy days, it is even more difficult.
“I lodged a report with the Public Works Department (PWD). So far, no action had been taken. So, we took matters into our own hands.
“We bought a packet of tar at RM35 and marked the exposed manhole. It is a temporary measure and we hope the authorities will fix it soon.”

A PWD spokesman said the exposed manhole was under the purview of Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas), and that the matter had been resolved.
“Upon receiving a report on the manhole, we forwarded the information to the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL). On Sunday night, contractors patched up the manhole with cold mix. The charges will be credited to Syabas’s Deposit Refund account.
“DBKL has urged Syabas to upgrade its slab manholes.”
