Unsafe for market-goers

VISITORS to the weekly Bazarena and Pasar Tani (farmer’s market) at the Shah Alam Stadium, in Section 13, Shah Alam, are at risk of falling into uncovered drains.

A frequent visitor to the area who wanted to be known only as Khiruddin, said the exposed drains were a danger to market-goers, especially children.

“Visitors with small children or the elderly have to be extra careful when walking because they could fall into the uncovered drains.

“I once saw a child fall into the drain because he was unaware that it did not have a cover.

“Luckily, he only suffered small cuts.”

He said some Good Samaritans then tried to cover the drain with wooden planks or tree branches to warn people to be careful.

Khiruddin said he also spoke to a parent who said that she had trouble bringing a stroller to the market because the small tires would get caught in the drain.

“We are getting concerned as more covers have gone missing. Shah Alam City Council should take immediate action to replace the missing drain covers.

“They should also look into replacing the metal gratings with concrete drain covers to prevent theft by scrap metal thieves.”

ACTIONLINE:

A Shah Alam City Council spokesman said based on a council investigation, they found that the covers were stolen at night and then sold as scrap metal.

“Such action is considered vandalism and we will mobilise enforcement officers to monitor the situation.

“Nevertheless, to ensure the comfort and safety of market-goers, the council is now replacing the missing covers, which will be done in stages.

“While the work is being done, we hope the public will be extra careful when using the area.”
