THE poor maintenance of drains along Jalan 2, Taman Selayang, in Kuala Lumpur may have led to the recent flash flood in the area.
A resident, identified only as Lim, expressed his frustration over the clogged drains which he claimed had caused the flood last Thursday.
“The flooded area was the backlane of a local supermarket here.
But with all the factories along the road, it’s no wonder the drains are clogged.
“The flash flood was terrible.
“The water in the drains soon overflowed onto the roads.
“It was really smelly.”
Lim said that there was also a construction site along the road which might have aggravated the clogged drain situation.
“The people in the surrounding area should be more responsible and not throw rubbish in the drains,” he added.

The Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) has sent its Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing and Engineering departments to clear the drains.
An MPS spokesman said the clogged drains were caused by contractors throwing rubbish in the drain.
“The drains are clogged with sand, trash and construction sediment and debris which caused the flooding.
“It is not that we don’t have a proper drainage system, but we need to remind the public to be responsible and not throw rubbish in drains.”
He said MPS would continue monitoring the area to ensure the problem did not recur.
“If the drains were not blocked, probably flash floods would not have occurred,” he added.
