Group highlights open manholes

A volunteer group in Petaling Jaya, called the Brotherhood, is again highlighting public facilities is disrepair in the Selangor city.

This time, the group has gone around neighbourhoods to mark uncovered utility manholes with paint so that the problem is noticed by the authorities.

One of the areas is Jalan Templer, near Sultan Abdul Aziz Mosque, where an uncovered manhole was spray painted by the group.

Yesterday, a check by NST Actionline found that the manhole had yet to be repaired.

A Brotherhood representative, who wished to be identified only as Johan, claimed that the exposed manhole was under the purview of Telekom Malaysia (TM).

“Based on information provided, the manhole cover in Jalan Templer has been damaged for a week.

“We spray painted it and then filed a report with the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ).

“We understand that MBPJ’s procedure is to fix the problem within 24 hours after receiving a complaint.

“However, it has been more than 24 hours,” he said.

Johan added that the Brotherhood had marked five other uncovered manholes — in Jalan Klang Lama, Taman Medan and Lorong Sultan near Shah’s Village Hotel.

A MBPJ spokesman said the exposed manhole was under the purview of TM and the council would inform the company to attend to the repair properly.

“We are aware of the report on the manhole and we are in the process of resolving the issue.

“We need to inform TM as there are specifications with which the company must comply when doing the repair.

“The repair will be carried during weekdays and we expect the problem to be resolved by Tuesday, at the latest,” said the spokesman.
