Drivers using, parking on bike lanes punished

CYCLISTS want action to be taken against selfish drivers parking on “blue” bicycle lanes in Kuala Lumpur.

Hashim Nor said many drivers did not think bicycles were vehicles.

“They ignore us completely. They park their vehicles on the bicycle lane.

“Ignorant drivers don’t realise they are endangering cyclists by parking on our lanes.

“The lanes help us cycle around the city safely.”

He said drivers also used the lanes when trying to evade traffic jams.

“Perhaps people are unaware of the bicycle lanes. If that’s the case, they should be educated.

“But some people know what they’re doing and still park on bicycle lanes. They are selfish.”

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) enforcement department director-general Osman Ismail said DBKL had been penalising offenders.

“Selfish drivers should not take DBKL for a fool. We will not tolerate anyone misusing the bicycle lanes.

“The lanes are to help cyclists riding through the city. We have been hard at work clamping and penalising offenders.”

Bicycles lanes were introduced ahead of the 9th World Urban Forum at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre in Kuala Lumpur from Feb 7 to 13.

The lanes are to promote a healthier lifestyle among city folk, and to help make cycling in the city safer.
