Damaged drain cover a hazard

A CRACKED drainage cover near the entrance of Taman Abidin apartments in Jalan Perak, George Town, poses danger to pedestrians.

Checks by the New Straits Times showed cracks and a hole on the cover. A child’s leg could easily get trapped in it.

To compound matters, the concrete cover also doubles as a walkway for residents. This poses a risk to pedestrians with visual impairment, as well as senior citizens.

A resident, who wanted to be known only as Karim, said the drainage cover had been damaged for almost a month.

“We, the elderly residents, do not know where to lodge a complaint. That is why we placed a long stick in the hole to alert pedestrians.

“It is dangerous if left unattended for long as the hole could get bigger.

“I hope the local authority will fix this problem before any untoward incident happens.”
