KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has allocated a capital expenditure of between RM9 billion and RM9.5 billion in 2019 for its grid, core generation businesses, renewable energy and smart meters.

Chief financial officer Nazmi Othman said from the total capex, RM6 billion, the biggest chunk of it, will be spent for grid division while RM2.5 billion will be allocated for generation division.

"Next year, we expect a better capex allocation for smart metering after the company has properly expanded the system,” he told the media after the 39th annual general meeting held here today.

Meanwhile, on the National Fiberisation and Connectivity Plan (NFCP) project that TNB is currently working on, chief executive officer Amir Hamzah said the utilities company expect earning to come in from next year onwards as the pilot project has been completed in Jasin, Melaka.

He said TNB will began implementing the NFCP project in the Klang Valley although he did not specifically mention a timeline to this.

"The pilot project in Melaka was started last year to prove the point and we are now looking at commercially viable penetration based on our current customer base and our expectation is to see positive results some time this year.

"It is still at its early days and we expect to see some pick up on the numbers from next year onwards. For this year, it will be about planning, staging and rolling it out by the end of this year,” he said.
