ICMR appoints Tan Sri Dr Munir as chairman

KUALA LUMPUR: The Institute for Capital Market Research Malaysia (ICMR) has appointed Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Mohd Munir Abdul Majid as the chairman of ICMR’s board of directors (BOD), effective 6 November 2019.

"We are delighted to welcome Munir to ICMR in this new capacity.

"His deep knowledge of both local and regional economic affairs, wide-ranging experience in leading research institutions, and strong ASEAN-level networks would further strengthen our institute’s capabilities at a crucial time, given the need for Malaysia’s capital market to improve its competitiveness and functioning to navigate the complexities of the evolving global landscape,” ICMR director Datin Azleen Osman Rani said in a statement today.

The ICMR is an initiative by the Securities Commission Malaysia, funded by the Capital Market Development Fund (CMDF) to act as an independent think-tank that aims to promote sustainable development of the Malaysian capital market through providing focused and

pragmatic research that can be tapped by industry, policy makers and regulators.

Munir started his illustrious career in 1978 as a leader writer for The New Straits Times Press (NSTP), and progressed to become its group editor.

He left NSTP in 1986 to become chief executive officer of Pertanian Baring Sanwa (PBS), whose name he changed to Commerce International Merchant Bankers (CIMB), which later transformed into one of Malaysia’s leading merchant banks.

He was invited by the government to establish and become the first and founding executive chairman of the Securities Commission (SC) in 1993, where he served for two terms until 1999.

Upon leaving the SC, he served as chairman on the BOD of reputable organisations across various industries, including Celcom Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines, Bank Muamalat Malaysia, CIMB Asean Research Institute, Institute of Strategic and International

Studies (ISIS) Malaysia, and the Malaysian Chapter of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council.

Munir is also an Honorary Fellow of the London School of Economics (LSE), and both started and headed its Southeast Asia International Affairs Programme.

In addition, he holds the position of Visiting Senior Fellow at the Centre for International Affairs,

Diplomacy and Strategy (IDEAS), and has written for IDEAS publications.

He has also published in International Politics, a British academic journal.

Earlier in February this year, Munir was appointed as a member of the Economic Action Council chaired by the Prime Minister, which deliberates on decisions affecting the country’s economic and financial matters.

Munir’s appointment completes the BOD of ICMR, thus achieving a critical milestone for the institution.
