Malaysia Airlines confirms codeshare continuation with American Airlines

SEPANG: Malaysia Airlines Bhd’s (MAB) passengers can continue to book and fly to the United States on codeshare flights operated by American Airlines without any disruption.

The national carrier said its codeshare agreement was still in place with American Airlines but it only served a unilateral agreement for the time being.

“Malaysia Airlines will still place its marketing code (MH) on applicable American Airlines sectors. But American Airlines has removed their marketing code (AA) from all applicable Malaysia Airlines sectors, MAB spokesperson told the New Straits Times today.

It was reported that American Airlines would no longer offer codeshares on Malaysia Airlines flights from Tuesday (November 12), following the United States Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) decision to downgrade the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia’s (CAAM) safety rating to Category 2.

Aviation news FlyerTalk reported on Tuesday that American Airlines would no longer offer codeshares on Malaysia Airlines flights effective on Tuesday.

American Airlines senior corporate communications manager Andrea Koos had reportedly said the decision was in compliance with the FAA downgrade.

“We are working with affected customers to rebook their itineraries,” Koos was quoted as saying.

FlyerTalk reported that in 2003, the CAAM was given a "Category 1" grade by the FAA, the highest a nation can receive.

It was reported that the rating was based on how closely a foreign aviation authority follows safety standards set by the United Nations' aviation oversight body, the International Civil Aviation Organisation.
