Modenas eyes repeat hit

THE Modenas Kriss has always been the “People’s Bike”. Made in Malaysia, it packs easy-to-ride characteristics and, with its affordable price, offers value for money.

It was well-received and became an instant hit, as evidenced by the Kriss MR1 - an updated version introduced in 2011 - that recorded massive sales of 150,000 units.

This year, Motosikal Dan Enjin Nasional (Modenas) is keen for a repeat through the latest iteration of “Motorsikal Rakyat”, the Kriss MR2.

The Kriss MR2, boasting an improved engine and styling, is propelled by a new single-cylinder air-cooled 110cc four-stroke engine, paired to a four-speed centrifugal-type clutch gearbox.

The Euro 3-compliant engine is good for 6.2kW (8.3hp) at 7,500rpm and a torque figure of 8.2Nm at 5,500rpm.

The suspension setup is a pair of telescopic forks up front and a twin shock absorbers at the rear, adjustable for pre-load.

There’s the unique 17-inch black alloy wheels fitted as standard, with red pinstripe along the circumference, giving it a striking look.

Under the seat is a larger 4.5-litre fuel tank, which Modenas claims allows the Kriss MR2 to cover around 200km.

Design-wise, the Kriss MR2 features sharper overall appearance. There’s aggressive front body with new headlights design and ECE-compliant new tail lights design.

Speaking at the launch, Modenas chief executive officer Amirudin Abd Kadir said: “I am pleased to note that we have successfully increased our manufacturing efficiency and after sales services support, contributing to a substantial reduction of cost, which we are more than happy to transfer to our customers.

“At Modenas, we do not compromise on quality and are always aware of the needs of the low to middle income group market in introducing new models or variants.”

Meanwhile, Datuk Seri Syed Faisal Albar, group managing director of DRB-HICOM Bhd said: “Modenas aims to increase its market share and, thus, regaining the glory of Modenas brand in the local market.”

The company is targeting to achieve its overall total sales of 60,000 units in local and regional markets by year-end.

The Kriss MR2 is available in three attractive colours, namely Strike Blue, Canary Yellow and Celebration Red. The bike is retailed at RM3,890, excluding the Goods and Services Tax.
