Saga, Persona, drive 50pc Proton sales jump

PERUSAHAAN Otomobil Nasional Sdn Bhd (Proton) has recorded a 50 per cent increase in vehicle sales and 10 per cent growth in market share following the implementation of zero-rated Goods and Services Tax (GST) last month.

“Buyers took the opportunity to get a Proton model during the ‘tax-free’ period,” said Proton Edar chief executive officer Abdul Rashid Musa after the launching of the new 3S Proton centre in Jalan Kapar, Klang.

Rashid said the best-selling models were Saga and Persona, which saw 70 and 56 per cent increase, respectively, compared to the previous month.

“This sales momentum is expected to remain until August and Proton needs to review the sales target this year, especially with the introduction of the Sales and Service Tax in September,” said Rashid.

Meanwhile, Pantai Bharu Corporation Sdn Bhd will operate the new 3S Proton centre. It is built on a 0.7ha plot and cost around RM7 million.

It has 12 service bays, eight hoist, three delivery bays, 70 customer parking lots and a waiting area that is able to accommodate 30 customers.

As of last month, 87 outlets were upgraded to 3S and 4S centres, with a target of 109 outlets to be upgraded by year-end.
