BMW unveils new 'X' models

BMW Malaysia launched a trio of models from the X family atawell-choreographed event at the Sungai Besi airforce base earlier this week.

The new X2 M35i (RM400,000) , X4 xDrive30i M Sport (RM380,000) and X5 xDrive40i M Sport (RM640,000) were unveiled by BMW Group Malaysia managing director Harald Hoelzl as the latest models from the Bavarian manufacturer.

“The performance of the BMW X portfolio in Malaysia has been nothing short of remarkable. Last year, we successfully delivered more than 5,000 BMW X vehicles, resulting in a significant double-digit growth of 19 per cent.

“In the first four months of this year alone, we delivered more than 1,500 BMW X vehicles, demonstrates the demand for our Sport Activity Vehicles and Sport Activity Coupe,” he said.

The all-new BMW X5 has grown in dimension, increasing by 36mm in length and 66mm in width as well as 19mm higher roofline. Similarly the wheelbase has increased by 42mm, with more luggage space of 650 litres up to 1,870 litres, depending on configuration.

Underneath the bonnet is a three litre six-cylinder engine with 340hp and 450Nm of peak torque, mated to a eight-speed Steptronic transmission. This propels the X5 to 100kph in 5.5 seconds.

Inside, the new X5 gets M Sport DNA, with M leather steering wheel with shift paddles and M stainless steel pedals. The X5 gets BMW Live Cockpit Professional with Navigation Professional powered by BMW Operating System 7.0, which combines two screens, a 12.3 inch Information display and a similarly sized central control display with touch function.

The X5 also gets the BMW Personal CoPilot, which includes a cruise control system with braking capability, lane departure warning with steer intervention, frontal collision warning with intervention, rear cross traffic warning and rear collision prevention.

The BMW digital key allows quick access to the car with an Android smartphone with near field communication (NFC), without a conventional key.

Colour options for the X5 are Mineral White, Black Sapphire, Arctic Grey and Phytonic Blue.

The X4 xDrive30i will be locally assembled. Equipped with a two-litre four-cylinder engine, the X4 makes 252hp with a peak torque of 350Nm. Top speed is 240kph, with a century sprint of 6.3 seconds.

The X4 comes with 10.25 inch Navigation System Professional with touch sensitive control display, and is equipped with a full-colour head-up display. In addition, it also comes with a 12.3 inch instrument display with back panel technology.

Colour options for the X4 are Alpine White, Carbon Black, Flamenco Red and Phytonic Blue.

The X2 M35i on the other hand, is sports-focused, with a roaring M-Performance 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing 306hp and 450Nm of torque.

Equipped with Xdrive intelligent four-wheel drive with M-Performance tuning, the X2 M35i gets to 100kph in a blistering 4.9 seconds.

The car has an Msport differential on the front axle gear designed to reduce traction losses on the front wheels. The M Sport braking system with dark blue metallic calipers are equipped with 18-inch steel calipers up front with 17-inch ones on the rear.

Inside, the X2 comes with M Sport leather steering wheel with paddles, interior trim finishers in aluminium hexagon anthracite and door entry trims in front with M35i emblem. The sports seats are Dakota leather-upholstered.

Colour options for the X2 M35i are Alpine White, Black Sapphire, Galvanic Gold, Misano Blue and Sunset Orange.
