The saga continues: Proton marks Saga's 35 years with Anniversary Edition

SUBANG JAYA: With over 1.8 million units sold since its official launch in 1985, the Proton Saga has gone through many iterations over the years. To commemorate its 35th birthday, Proton has launched yet another version: the Anniversary Edition.

The Saga Anniversary Edition is also the 4,150,035th car to roll off Proton's manufacturing line (see the number 35 there?).

The car was unveiled today at a virtual launch through Proton's Facebook page – an event which was also a first for the national vehicle manufacturer.

"The Proton Saga is the car that put Malaysia, and therefore our economy on wheels and, it is still doing so," shared Proton chairman Datuk Sri Syed Faisal Albar.

Meanwhile, Proton chief executive officer, Dr Li Cunrong said: "The Saga Anniversary Edition is a special gift for a special occasion to all Malaysians.

"It is our way of saying 'thank you' for supporting the Saga for the past 35 years. Plus, you can order it today by visiting our showrooms or booking it online."

The Proton Saga Anniversary Edition will be limited to 1,100 units and is available exclusively in black with yellow highlights, for both the exterior and interior.

On the exterior, the car sports yellow highlights for its front grille, front lip, side skirting, rear bumper, and side mirrors.

Moving inside, the Saga features redesigned instrument cluster graphics, as well as yellow garnish on the centre console and air-con vents.

The rest of the car remains unchanged from the 1.3 Premium it is based on, meaning that the Saga Anniversary Edition is propelled by a 1.3-litre VVT four-cylinder DOHC engine, good for 94hp and 120Nm of torque.

Transmission is a four-speed torque-converter automatic, while the seats retain the fabric upholstery.

As for the pricing, the car is retailed at RM39,300, which is identical to the current Saga 1.3 Premium AT after zero sales tax rebate.

Good news for 2019 Saga owners – you can upgrade your car to an Anniversary Edition as Proton also offers the 35th Anniversary Package at RM2,035.

This package comes with front skirting, side skirting, door visors, hood insulator, trunk lid cover and boot tray. Proton said that the price is a RM315 saving, as purchasing the parts individually would cost RM2,350.

On another note, Proton is now offering the N95 cabin filter (previously only available to the X70) in other models: the Saga, Iriz, Persona and Exora, registered after July 9, 2020.

However, existing owners who wish to install the cabin filter can still do so by purchasing it at RM59 (excluding labour cost). Additionally, purchases before Oct 9, 2020 will subject to a 15 per cent discount, meaning the cabin filter can be purchased at RM50.15 only.
