#TECH: Smartphones that charge in 15 minutes coming soon

A host of Chinese manufacturers are planning to launch smartphones with a record 125-watt charging power, from as soon as 2022. This level of power means that a smartphone battery could be recharged in just a quarter of an hour.

According to the Indian website 91Mobiles, Realme with the GT 2 Pro, Oppo with the Find X4 and OnePlus with the 10 Pro are expected to be the first manufacturers to launch handsets with 125W fast-charging technology, from as soon as the first half of 2022. Note that Xiaomi and iQOO have already launched models with 120W fast-charging technology this year, exclusively in China.

All these devices are likely to be released in China first, before becoming available internationally. With this level of power, users can expect a smartphone with a 4,000 mAh battery to fully charge in 15 minutes. It could even charge to 50 per cent in just five minutes.

While this technology looks exciting on paper, there's a risk that it could degrade the battery more quickly than more conventional charging. In fact, it has been proven that the higher the charge power, the more it negatively impacts battery lifespans. Ultimately, between the number of charge cycles and the charging power, manufacturers will need to find a happy medium.

Note that Xiaomi is already working on a 200W "HyperCharge," taking just eight minutes to fully recharge its smartphone battery.
