New singer-songwriter Sam Nuhair ditches ballad for contemporary folk

“I DON’T think ballads are for me,” said singer-songwriter Sam Nuhair.

The former alum of Astro’s reality talent show Akademi Fantasia 2014 said she was ready to leave the genre behind for one which would be more appealing to the young and urban music listeners.

After “graduating” from AF, the 24-year-old artiste whose full name is Syamila Nuhair Zainordi, released her debut single, a ballad entitled Kau Menjauh, in August last year.

However, the tune which she co-composed with Agal Music and Zakey Javis didn’t quite hit the desired mark.

“I was naturally upset but that didn’t discourage me to try something different.

“I figured a tweak in my original music direction is needed,” said Sam who will hit the studio next week to record her new single.

This time around, Sam is embarking on a genre she had not tried before -- contemporary folk.

Her management team from JoePRCinternational has roped in hip hop star and rapper Altimet for her brand new single.

“The single is a duet with Altimet who is also the composer of the song.

“I don’t see any harm in trying something entirely new even though this genre did cross my mind some time back. I just did not have the time to look into it further,” said Sam who admitted that having Altimet on board had given her a sense of confidence in seeing the project through.

“When Altimet told me that I have suitable vocals to carry contemporary folk tunes, that helped make this new attempt smoother for me,” she said.

Sam has received the demo tape for the single, and she is confident that it will have a following once it is released.

“We’re looking at releasing the single by end of the month,” said the Perak-born artiste who plans to record the tune in both English and Malay.

The lyrics to the yet-to-be-titled single touches on the trend of many Malay parents who place a high dowry when they marry their daughters off.

Meanwhile, Altimet said he it was never his intention to criticise about the practice of having expensive dowry.

“I am just telling a story based on my observation,” he said.

On another development, Altimet has been approached by TV3 to compose the theme song for its long-running women’s magazine show, Nona. The tune will be performed by Sam.
