Adaptation of S. Korean series Coffee Prince gets its own drama

KUALA LUMPUR: “HATERS gonna hate.” So said My Coffee Prince director Michael Ang, when asked to comment on the unfavourable reaction by Netizens towards actor Fattah Amin, who may lead the cast of the local adaptation of the popular South Korean television drama series.

It was reported earlier that the Suri Hati Mr Pilot actor will play the leading role of Han Gyeol, which was originally played by South Korean actor Gong Yoo.

Some Netizens took to social media to express their dissatisfaction should Fattah play the beloved character.

Ang said it was impossible to please everyone all the time.

“There’s bound to be people who like and dislike what I offer on the small screen.

“Just like a plate of char kway teow, there are going to be those who either love it, or hate it,” he told the New Straits Times recently.

However, the director, who was behind Suri Hati Mr Pilot and Hero Seorang Cinderella said the decision on the leading man had yet to be finalised.

So far, only actress Janna Nick has been confirmed to star in the series.

She will be playing the tomboyish Eun Chan, originally played by actress Yoon Eun-hye.

“We will announce the rest of the confirmed cast later next month,” he added.

Over on the Twitterverse, a “war” has exploded between fans of Fattah and fans of the original Coffee Prince drama.

User @haeseob15 tweeted: “They gonna ruin the drama.” While @Aleiya94 said: “Why can’t they just come up with a new storyline instead of an adaptation?” @irdinazulkefli said she would sit in a corner and watch the drama “flop”.

Meanwhile, there were others who expressed their support towards the casting of Fattah in the series. @ZuraSham81 tweeted: “Be strong @fattahamin! You have our support for #coffeeprincemy”.

Twitter user @Eizan Zain gave her support too: “Can’t wait to see @fattahamin in #coffeeprincemy with @jannanick95. Bring it on guys!”

Another user @schakassim said: “No one else could do better other than @fattahamin for #coffeeprincemy.”

Filming of the new drama series, tentatively titled My Coffee Prince, will begin next week.

The 29-episode series will be aired in November on Astro Ria.
