Malaysian celebs join in to protest capital status of Jerusalem

KUALA LUMPUR: Muslims worldwide have expressed their outrage over the recent move by US President Donald Trump to officially recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Local celebrities have also taken to their social media accounts to voice their displeasure.

Yesterday, Datuk Afdlin Shauki, who is currently in Mecca to perform his umrah pilgrimage, wrote on his Instagram account: This is so wrong. Jerusalem will always belong to Palestine!

Accompanying the post by the actor, director and producer was a picture of a Google search for Baitul Maqdis (Jerusalem) with a result that listed the holy city as the capital of Israel.

Singer-songwriter Faizal Tahir also mirrored Afdlin’s sentiment with an Instagram post that read: Jerusalem will always be the capital of Palestine. Always. Go find ur own capital @b.netanyahu.

On her Instagram and Twitter accounts, actress Emma Maembong expressed her solidarity with Palestine.

She wrote: I am Emma from Malaysia and I stand with PALESTINE. The whole world stands with PALESTINE.

Actress, singer and TV host Yana Samsudin wrote on her Instagram account: Pray for al-aqsa #savepalestine #bismillahadduha.

Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza Tarudin also reposted an entry on her Instagram account yesterday, which called on Muslims in Malaysia to disseminate the news and efforts to restore Jerusalem to its rightful people via social, print and electronic media platforms.
