Cancer stricken 90s singer Azreen's condition worsens

KUALA LUMPUR: Popular 1990s singer Azreen Manan, who has been diagnosed with Stage 4 cervical cancer, has been admitted to the National Cancer Institute in Putrajaya.

In a news report by mStar Online yesterday, her 63-year-old mother, Zawanai Ahmad Affandi, revealed that Azreen was also suffering from complications of the kidney and clogged intestines.

“She had been battling the ilness for the past two years. She also had her ovaries removed.

“We initially thought she was alright since the doctor had confirmed that all her tumours had been removed," she said.

But Azreen complained of pain in her leg three months ago. An MRI scan revealed that she had more than six tumours in the area.

Zawanai added that her 41-year-old daughter's condition had worsened considerably which prevented her from undergoing any operation.

At the moment, Azreen, whose real name is Azrina Abdul Manan, can only journey to and from the hospital for her chemotheraphy treatment.

“She can't be operated on since it could worsen her already critical condition. She hasn't gone to the toilet for four days already and only vomits," she said.

Zawanai hopes that people will pray for her daughter's health to improve.

Azreen was only 12 when she released her debut album in 1989. She is known for the song Semalam Yang Berlalu.

She also represented Malaysia in the singing competition Asia Bagus in 1992 and finished at third place, losing to Indonesia's Krisdayanti who took the top spot.

Having starred in the 1993 movie, Azizah The Legend, Azreen created quite a stir when she married Datuk Seri Tengku Kamaruzzaman Sultan Abu Bakar, better known as Tengku Intan, the same year at the age of 16.

Their union resulted in two children who are now aged 21 and 17.

They divorced and Azreen tied the knot once again but unfortunately, that marriage was not fated to last either.
