KUALA LUMPUR: Over the years, the global music scene has witnessed a flurry of ferocious female rappers like Nicki Minaj and Cardi B break into the male-dominated hip-hop scene.
Over on our shores, new singer Sarah Suhairi is eager to further break the boundaries of hip-hop as she sets her mind to become the country’s first ever hijab-wearing hip-hop and rap artiste.
The 18-year-old who was crowned the winner of Big Stage, a reality talent show for new and up-and-coming singers, last September shared that the genre had always appealed to her.
She even showcased some of her rapping skills during an episode of the show, when she performed a cover of K-Pop BlackPink’s hit tune Ddu-Du Ddu-Du that had rap elements to it.
“I listen to a lot English hip-hop and rap songs and I’ve incorporated some rap elements in my new single Nyawa Dan Raga.
“This is just my first step towards becoming Malaysia’s first hijab-wearing rapper,” she said in a recent news report.
“After this, I hope to release a full hip-hop and rap single,” she said.
The music video for Nyawa Dan Raga available on YouTube has received more than two million views since its release on Oct 15.
