#Showbiz: Simon Yam leaves hospital, 4 days after stabbing

KUALA LUMPUR: Popular Hong Kong actor Simon Yam Tat-Wah is out of danger, and set to leave the hospital today.

Entertainment portal Jayne Stars reported yesterday that 63-year-old Yam, who starred in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle Of Life, had recuperated well at Hong Kong’s Adventist Hospital.

He underwent a successful second operation last Sunday, for the injury to his right fingers, and was visited by his wife Qi Qi, daughter Ella Yam and elder brother Peter Yam.

Qi Qi said: “Everything is all right with Simon, the follow-up surgery took two hours and was successful, because the doctors reconnected his nerves and made sure he did not lose sensitivity in his fingers.”

She added: “Simon is in great spirits and tells fans he is all right. He says thank you for your prayers and well-wishes.”

Yam’s manager Mani Fok, who also visited him, said a better precaution would be taken to protect the veteran actor, by lessening interactive sessions with fans.

The actor himself thanked fans via social media network Weibo, in a post which was accompanied by a photograph of a teddy bear and flowers.

He hoped that help could be extended to the man who stabbed him on stage during a promotional event in Zhongshan, Guangdong, China last Saturday.

The attacker who is believed to be schizophrenic stabbed Yam in his abdomen and slashed his right fingers with a knife. He was subsequently detained by police.

The incident sparked calls by the Chinese media for the authorities in China and Hong Kong to give more support to people with mental health problems.
