#Showbiz: Finas' new ruling is simply nonsensical and silly, says Michael Ang

KUALA LUMPUR: Popular director and producer Michael Ang is against the new ruling by the National Film Development Corporation (Finas) forbidding young actors to play elderly characters.

The 43-year-old who is known to be vocal, shared his two cents on his Instagram last night on the new ruling announced by Finas chairman Datuk Hans Isaac yesterday.

While the move was said to protect the livelihood of veteran artistes, Ang said that it was a double-edged sword.

“This is not a good way to address the problem, while it promises opportunity for one group, it is limiting the others from getting acting jobs. This is not a win-win situation,” he wrote.

“As a producer and director, I have always given opportunity for veteran artistes, this ruling seems to be limiting creativity.

“Imagine a production which tells the story of a character chronicling from her age of 28 to 60. Don’t tell me that we need different actresses to play this character in her 20’s, 40’s and 60’s? Indirectly it will not allow an actress to show her real capability of developing her character as well.”

Ang also said that Finas should find other ways to resolve the issue of safeguarding the rights and welfare of veteran artistes who had been rampantly sidelined, rather than this new ruling which he viewed as simply nonsensical and silly.
