#Showbiz: Traditional delights at DFP's upcoming Junjung Tradisi concert

KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP) and Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) will be showcasing the beauty of traditional Malay songs and dances in Junjung Tradisi — A Night with UTP Stars on Sept 24.

The show will be the first-ever cultural performance concert that will be held at DFP this year.

Audiences can expect to be entertained by a string of performances that incorporate gamelan Melayu, traditional Malay songs and contemporary gamelan tunes, complemented by the alluring traditional Malay dances and unique vocals.

The concert will feature the talented performing arts organisations from UTP, namely the UTP Performing Arts Group (UPAG), the gamelan group Sanggar Kirana and the traditional musicians of UTP Petra Group.

At UTP, students are given ample opportunities to develop their leadership skills and creative talents through cultural activities and performing arts.

This is in line with UTP's mission in producing well-rounded graduates who are excellent and innovative in various academic and non-academic fields.

Among the performances to be featured in the concert are Joget Gamelan Topeng, Zapin Madah Pusaka, Joget Selayang Pandang, and music of Inang Godampol, Keroncong: Kasih, Isang, Madah Teruna and Antara Selat.

Since 2002, UPAG has vigorously promoted and showcased various Malaysian arts and dances through lively and colourful performances. Consisting of 30 students of different races pursuing various academic disciplines, UPAG's ambition is to be a catalyst to inspire an appreciation of Malaysia's art, culture and heritage.

UPAG had represented Malaysia for the Cheonan World Dance Festival in Korea multiple times from 2011 to 2021.

First established in February 2002, Sanggar Kirana still stands firm to this day as a place where music and passion are engineered with the aim of promoting and preserving the traditional arts while instilling and inspiring students into loving the national heritage.

Sanggar Kirana has been involved in various performances and events all around the world including Malaysia Night in London, as well as Taste of Malaysian Culture in Nottingham, UK (2015), the Gamelan Festival in Solo, Indonesia (2018) and Festival Gamelan Istana Budaya (FesGIB) in 2019.

Petra is a newly established group led by Zaidin Mohd Nor, aiming to preserve traditional Malay culture through music like Asli, Inang, Joget, Zapin, Ghazal and Keroncong using traditional and modern musical instruments.

It made its debut at UTP's 14th Convocation Ceremony back in 2014 and has been performing for the event annually.

The group also won Second Place at the Istanbul International Chorus & Folk Music Festival in 2015 in the Folk Instrument category.
